MUSCAT, NOV 7

A new hiking trail has been opened in the Wilayat of Al Amerat, adding to Oman's growing adventure tourism attractions and offering hikers and visitors an opportunity to explore the area's natural beauty.

The Al Quraiha Peak Trail stretches approximately 3 kilometres, covering both the ascent and descent, and reaches a summit about 450 metres above sea level. The peak is distinguished by its rugged mountain landscape, panoramic views and scenic location.

The time required to reach the summit varies according to visitors' fitness levels, walking pace and the number and duration of rest breaks along the route.

The initiative began with a group of young adventure enthusiasts from the Al Amerat Exploration Team, who shared a passion for exploring mountains and reaching new summits. What started as an interest in discovering the area's natural attractions gradually developed into a community initiative to promote the wilayat's tourism potential.

Work to develop and prepare the Al Quraiha Peak Trail began in 2025. The voluntary effort involved cleaning, levelling and improving the route to make it more accessible to visitors.

Established in March 2020, the Al Amerat Exploration Team was formed by six young enthusiasts: Badr al Jardani, Ahmed al Habsi, Hamad al Batashi, Abdulaziz al Jardani, Asaad al Ghasani and Mahmoud al Jabri.

"The idea behind establishing the team was driven by a love of nature and a desire to discover the natural and archaeological sites found throughout Al Amerat Wilayat," said Badr al Jardani.

The Al Amerat Exploration Team, with support from the Dream Team, undertook the work to clear, level and prepare the trail. The Dream Team subsequently contributed additional features, including an Omani national flagpole and an informative compass identifying prominent landmarks in the wilayat.

The project culminated in Al Quraiha Camp, organised by the Al Amerat Volunteer Team in cooperation with Muscat Municipality. The trail has since emerged as a destination for adventure enthusiasts and visitors, adding a new attraction to the area's tourism offerings.

The initiative aims to introduce visitors to the region's natural and historical sites, highlight their tourism value and encourage a culture of adventure, exploration and teamwork.

Among the features installed at the peak are the Omani national flagpole, symbolising national pride and belonging, and a compass displaying the landmarks of the Wilayat of Al Amerat.

Badr said the project faced several challenges, including difficult mountainous terrain, limited access to certain locations and the continuing need for maintenance to keep the trail clean and safe for visitors.

As part of efforts to promote environmental awareness, the Al Amerat Volunteer Team recently organised Al Quraiha Camp through its Environment Committee, led by committee chairman Aseel al Zadjali, in cooperation with Muscat Municipality.

Held on October 31 to mark Omani Agriculture Day, the camp brought together nearly 80 hikers and environmental enthusiasts. Activities included planting seedlings and scattering seeds at the site and along the trail to improve vegetation cover, raise environmental awareness and promote the importance of agriculture and conservation.

The event also marked the official inauguration of the Al Quraiha Peak Trail, with members of various hiking teams taking part.
